PONI (Pediatric Onset of Neuromotor Impairments) Lab Logo | 2019 - 2020

The PONI (Pediatric Onset of Neuromotor Impairments) Lab is a research laboratory based out of the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. They were looking for a logo that captured the nature of their work while appealing to their younger audience. I designed the logo with the wordplay “pony” in mind, which was all agreed on. I initially took this approach more literally with images of ponies featured in the designs (shown below). After some concern that it may give the wrong impression that the lab did research on animals, we decided to go with a horseshoe. This continued to play on the pony theme while also depicting their goals on providing support for those living with neuromotor impairments like cerebral palsy; in the same a way horseshoe provides support to ponies. This was further shown by including an AFO (ankle foot orthosis) at the end.
